A rare thing indeed to have a client who continues to follow your evolution and periodically, in the course of a decade and a half, calling you back to add to your earlier work. In this way, the site of a modest villa has gradually assumed the character of a work-in-progress.It is not a little intimidating to rethink a beautiful site, expanding some of its potential and enriching it with spaces of diverse character without breaking their family mould. Whereas the compact volume of the principal residence stays strictly within traditional bounds, the garden apartment accommodates a small kitchen and bath behind a curving back wall. In the near future, a mobile wing will add a living space that can be set at the desired angle with regard to its southern exposure or closed down altogether. A small limonaia nestles above the grounds, protected from the winds by a retaining wall. Its construction is described separately.
