TRENTO TUNNELS ”The ABC of the Trentino ”
The Trento Tunnels are an experiment in the repurposing of an abandoned industrial site, a reinvention of the history museum, an animated archive, an act of healing a tear in the urban fabric of a regional capital, a pair of urban gardens born in an asphalt crib, and a collective enterprise involving everybody.
The 2009-2010 edition was built on the same bifurcation between an immersive black and a didactic white tunnel, with a panoramic history of the Trentino Region sectioned into a playful alphabet , much like a Munarian children’s book.
The visitor’s itinerary is now contained within a single tunnel divided into a large passage where enormous sculptural letters extend into hieroglyphics, unfolding both macro- and micro-histories, and a small passage in which the human topography of the region is represented by means of a narrow gallery of talking heads organized in a rigorous North-South sequence.
A new modular system of exhibition spaces and open rooms have been developed for the white tunnel, which now finds its functions multiplied as a meeting hall, performance space, gallery and laboratory.
