TRANSFORMERS – AN ACT OF DISAPPERANCE
CERNOBBIO AND CAMBRIDGE, MA

Today’s spaces tend to be used in a variety of ways and for different purposes. Laboratories and kitchens are prime candidates for such flexible use of equipment. In both cases movable parts need to disappear so as to make room for others or new components opened up from within tables, counters, and cabinets.
In extending an eat-in kitchen in a house designed by us a few years ago, we closed a window with a table (when not in use) and filtered light back when the table is lowered. An exquisitely crafted counter assumes a silent presence when not serving for cooking.
In a narrow long space of an information technology lab, we constructed a correspondingly extended 10 meters long table with all chairs, cabinets, and built-in equipment nestled under it. The table thus assumes the role of a true mensa, a place of work, exchange, operation and relaxation that adapts instantly to changing circumstances and expectations.
