ENRICO CASSINA ARCHIVE, A FASCINATION WITH THINGS REDISCOVERED
Consultancy at the crossover between design and industry

The acquisition by OMP (Officine Meccaniche Porro) of what was left of the Enrico Cassina firm has saved material of great quality and refined craftsmanship from oblivion, opening up a field of research between Design and Industry from the begining of the 20th Century to the 1950’s, as well as suggesting new scenarios for the future.
For us as consultants, it was a matter of reconstructing a history backwards, beginning with the objects--handles of specific technical, ergonomic and tactile qualities--and then tracking down their documentation, culling the registries of trademark prototypes for clues to exact dates.

Our research in the archives gradually brought the documentation to light and revealed the handles’s original designations. By now “Door handles of aerodynamic shape” have come back into fashion and we are able to appreciate the degree of sensibility and the exquisite tactile character rather than share the infatuation with the geometric prejudices of the inter-war years.
What makes many of these handles so contemporary is their corporeal nature, a direct result of an intimate relationship between research and workshop production.
