Professor at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York since 2008. Previously she taught Museography at the Politecnico di Milano (20042008), she was Distinguished Visiting Professor at the New York Institute of Technology (20052006) and Assistant Professor at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich (19971999).
In 1993 she founded the Studio Terragni Architetti in Como, which works between Italy, Switzerland, Albania and the United States and in 2011 she founded the DRAW (Design Research Architecture Writing) studio in New York. Projects range from detailed ergonomics analyzes to the transformation and regeneration of vast abandoned military and industrial sites, to the design of exhibitions. Discontinuities, voids and forgotten places, structures that have fallen into ruins are her favorite spa ces for invention, because they require a rethinking of the way to intervene in order not to impose new structures on neglected sites, but full of memory. She has provided consultancy for international agencies and institutions, including: ANVUR National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research System; Legacy City Design Assembly (The Max Bond Center, CCNY, American Assembly, Columbia University), Canada Council for the Arts to select Canada’s exhibition team for the Venice Architecture Biennale (2014), and YAP MAXXI, a program which promotes and supports young architects, in collaboration with MoMA and MoMA PS1, Rome/New York (since 2011). She has received numerous international awards and prizes, including the Council of Europe Museum Prize (2020) and the BIGSEE Architecture Award (2019) for the National Museum of Secret Surveillance, ‘House of Leaves’ in Tirana; Smart Future Minds Award for the Trento Tunnel project in
collaboration with Jeffrey Schnapp (2011) and ArcVision PrizeWomen and Architecture, an international social architecture award for women designers (2013). In 2014 the Gaps monograph: ‘Maps, Thresholds and Breaks in the Architectural Designs of Elisabetta Terragni’ was published, with a preface by Matthias Sauerbruch, published by Nodo libri.
