ASILO SANT'ELIA
RENOVATION OF STRUCTURE, RECLAIMING OF FURNITURE

A faithful and detailed restoration, realized by Emilio Terragni (Studio Terragni/Como) in the 1980's, retained the allocation of spaces and saved every detail, including colors as they were originally intended, in order to bring this pioneering kindergarten back to its true form without shirking the crucial question: How can today's expectations be met by a landmark building of Italian rationalism?
In this case, the solution sprang from selective interventions, so as to ease the daily experience of the little kids and their teachers, without neglecting the demands of a structural analysis based on expert advice.
Proceeding in this way, it was possible to save the slender reinforced concrete elements in their extremely slender shape, to maintain the large sunscreens, now activated by remote control while still keeping their original mechanism intact, and finally by renewing the original color schema and linoleum surfaces.
