The gutted house of the Pagani family of artists in an pre-alpine village above the Lake of Lugano was to be readied for exhibition purposes as a museum of emigrant artists who were especially numerous in this region. As it was clear from the start that only a very few of the works by Paolo Pagani (1655-1717) would ever enter the municipal museum, we wanted to convey something of his artistic training and the tradition that enabled artists from these parts to be active in the fields of painting, sculpture and architecture.
The baroque façade of Casa Pagani bespeaks the returning master's desire to endow his hometown with the luster of his fame. As virtually nothing of the house's interior remains, however, we set off the reception area by a wall with openings in the shape of the elements of Euclid (patterned after the first Italian edition of 1482), here displayed as 'windows' giving onto the realm of art and education. The modest exhibition spaces were lined with backlit fabric to create a diffuse atmosphere similar to that of baroque interiors.
