While working on the transformation of the former Gjiri i Panormes submarine base into a Cold War Museum, the commission was extended to encompass a larger segment of the site with the aim of converting 24 abandoned military structures and barracks into facilities for visitors. The solution adopted bears the label "No Concrete" because it preserves the extant structures while weaving light modular elements into the ruins.
At the very moment when rampant real estate speculation, in the form of reinforced concrete construction, is threatening to devour the Albanian coastline, the "No Concrete" project proposes respect for the persistence of historic remains and for the fleeting nature of human endeavor. Nimbly built and readily altered, the inserts leave the extant remains largely untouched while making the site suitable for novel renewable uses.
